The Center’s recent mini-conference for CEOs, CFOs and senior leadership, “It's The Mission Not Just The Money,” rolled out a number of critical pieces of information from experts, and gave leaders a chance to network with colleagues. We can’t replicate the networking but we can share some of the timely and useful information that was presented by our expert speakers.
Billie C. Greer, Office of Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, gave an update on the State budget process and status of Federal stimulus funding in California. (click here to view a list of Federal Stimulus opportunities in California) and pointed audience members to a website that serves as a clearinghouse – www.recoveryCA.gov
Jenny Serrano, County of Los Angeles CEO’s Office, introduced a new stimulus-funded program providing thousands of skilled workers for nonprofit agencies during the next 12 months, with 80% or more of the employee’s salary paid by the County
John Valenzuela, CPA, provided an incredible, wide-ranging State, Federal and IRS legislative update focusing on new or upcoming laws that will significantly impact nonprofits
Sally Angel, AS Consulting, compared 2008 salary and benefits in the nonprofit sector with previous years, and identified trends.
Ken Tiratira, Employers Group, worked with the leaders in the room to develop a list of strategies to reduce staffing costs, often the largest expense line item for nonprofits. Click here to view the list of cost saving tactics the group identified.
Saundra Bryant, All People’s Christian Center; Benjamin Torres, CD Tech; Bruce Saito, Los Angeles Conservation Corps; Noemi Soto, Coalition for Responsible Community Development and Mary Tower, Pfaffinger Foundation, each have our thanks for participating in a case study at the end of the session. --
The mini-conference took place on Monday, June 8th from 9:30 am to 4 pm. Its focus was to provide up-to-the-minute, concrete information, tools and tactics to help nonprofit leaders cope effectively during these difficult financial times. All of the experts encouraged the leaders to take this opportunity to look at their organizations with fresh eyes – staffing, fundraising and programs. Making the tough decisions can be heart wrenching. But applying a fair, thoughtful and honorable decision-making process that flows directly from your organization’s mission will ensure greater acceptance, even if there isn’t full agreement.
Participants in the mini-conference came away with:
- A better understand the shifting landscape of nonprofit financing,
- Practical, useful tools and techniques to help use every dollar as wisely as possible, and
- Guidance from the presenters and other participants about innovative and unusual approaches to meet the mission with less.
Thank you to our expert speakers and to participants who spent the day with the Center for Nonprofit Management.
