Instructor's Bio Marta Segura is the Principal Consultant and founder of the Grassroots Organizational & Leadership Development consultancy. In this role, Segura endeavors to provide the local Latino non profit sector with tools to identify issues, reflect, plan and act upon their own priorities and to create sustainable community change through improved internal systems and infrastructure and much needed policy change. Her consultancy was founded in 2003 in Los Angeles, California. She has served on grant making boards for the Liberty Hill Foundation, a grant review committee for First 5 LA, NIEHS, and founded the Tony Norton Endowment at the UCLA School of Public health, and has found much success in coaching Latino led non profits in fundraising and event management. She has worked in partnership with organizations such as Hispanics in Philanthropy, the Rockefeller Foundation, Grassroots Institute for Fundraising Training, Tides Foundation, the Liberty Hill Foundation and the Flintridge Foundation to provide Technical Assistance to Latino led non profits and build their capacity, particularly in the area of fundraising. She also has been certified as a trainer for the Grassroots Institute for Fundraising Training, founded by Kim Klein, one of the most well known fundraising trainers nationwide, whom also published the Grassroots Fundraising Journal. In her position as Southern California Program Director for Communities for a Better Environment, Segura had oversight over regional program planning, alliance building, campaign development and fundraising. In addition, one of Segura's top priorities is to build ties with allies and support coalition-based efforts that affect regional and statewide policy. Segura was previously a program officer for the Flintridge Foundation for their Community Services Program where she provided non-profits with technical assistance on organizational effectiveness and fundraising. In 1999 she was a Program Officer with The California Endowment (then, 10th largest foundation in the U.S.). Prior to The California Endowment, Segura spent four years as a Program Director for the UCLA Labor Occupational Safety and Health (LOSH) a Program of the UCLA Center for Labor Research and Education. Her major projects included working on Environmental Justice and Border Health Justice issues with coalitions and networks. Her background in Environmental Sciences, health education, community organizing, popular education and comprehensive approach to organizational and community capacity building has brought her to her current work with grassroots and social justice organizations in Southeast Los Angeles.
Marta is currently working on the leveraging of resources for marginalized non-profit organizations as well as the development of a strategic planning processes and has been hired as an event planner over the long term by the Delhi Center, where she recently coordinated and managed both the Latino Small Business Expo and 2007 Delhi Center Gala Dinner. In addition, she supported Assemblyman Solorio's Office in the management of a Trade Expo for the Michoacano's (also held at Delhi Center) and is currently on a committee to help promote the Santa Ana International Latino Film Festival. She developed a communications plan and implemented various needed public relations efforts. Segura has also been very involved in multi-issue social movements of Los Angeles including the areas of environmental justice, immigrant rights, labor, health and economic development.
She also sits on the Program Policy Advisory Committee for the Liberty Hill Foundation and has been on their Community Funding Board for the issue area of Environmental Justice. Her fluency in Spanish, cultural competency and non profit background have inspired her to create cross cultural and multi-issue collaborations between various communities.
Segura holds a B.A. from U.C. Santa Barbara, and an M.P.H. from the U.C.L.A School of Public. She has over 15 years experience in the non-profit sector. Her background in public health, management within the non-profit sector and as program officer for foundations brings a unique lens to envisioning improvements, community capacity building, and grass roots organizing through innovative yet simple solutions.
Finally, Segura was born into an immigrant family in San Jose, California in March of 1964. Both parents worked as agricultural workers, but they served to inspire her and her two sisters to set high goals and to always give back. One of her sisters is Deputy Director of Redevelopment for a South East Los Angeles city, and the other a nurse who started her own Skin Care Clinic. She is now the mother of a very active and curious son, Andres Sebastian, who is now 3 years old. She has a passion for her work, learning, cultures, travel and motherhood.
