INTRODUCING THE LA SOCIAL VENTURE COMPETITION

The Academies for Social Entrepreneurship (ASE) in partnership with the Center for Nonprofit Management (CNM) are pleased to announce the launch of the Social Enterprise Academy and Venture Competition. Working with established nonprofits looking to grow, the Los Angeles Social Enterprise Academy and Venture Competition will mentor organizations on how to be more effective at expanding earned income opportunities and offer a platform to present their ventures to potential investors.

The 2010 LA Social Venture Competition will be conducted over the summer. It is designed for organizations that already have earned income and seek support in amplifying their social enterprise venture.

Following this introductory workshop, participants will be expected to participate in a 3 half-day series (information forthcoming) focusing on those aspects of business which are most challenging to growth planning. Each organization will also be matched with a pro bono mentor who will support them in developing a professional presentation that is effective with potential investors.

This introductory workshop will cover:
•    Clarifying your best  earned income options
•    What works- Outlining a process and timeline
•    To Pitch or not to Pitch-- Why participate in Venture Competition

Instructor's Bio

Betsy Densmore is Founder and President of Academies for Social Entrepreneurship. Formerly an officer with the Social Enterprise Institute, she has worked with hundreds of non-profit organizations on how to grow mission-related earned income ventures and improve their business acumen. She is also a popular workshop leader on leadership and organization development.

Immediately prior to joining the Institute, she was a program leader at Landmark Education, a global training and personal development organization. Before that, Densmore served as the Executive Director of the Chicago Bar Foundation for ten years. Under her stewardship, the Foundation tripled in size and was recognized for its regional leadership in expanding access to legal services and education programs. As Program Director for the Center for Neighborhood Technology (Chicago), she supervised a large, fee for service social enterprise which supported nonprofit organizations in reducing their energy costs, and worked with private foundations and public agencies to develop special grant and loan programs for low income neighborhoods.
