Course Description

Is Your Organization Ready for a Loan?


In this interactive workshop, we will provide practical information for nonprofit organizations considering access to debt.

Topics covered:

-       the kinds of loans available;

-       how to match your need to the right type of loan;

-       what lenders look for from borrowers;

-       what borrowers should expect from the loan application and underwriting process; and,

-       what borrowers should look for from a good lender.

Take Aways:

-           learn how an organization is assessed for credit-worthiness

-           how to assess your own organization in its ability to qualify for and access credit

-          one-on-one discussions of your organization’s situation.

Instructors’ Bio’s

Jessica LaBarbera, Director of the California Market, leads program growth and product delivery in California. She is responsible for identifying market needs and opportunities, oversees new regional initiatives, and launches new products and services in the region. Having previously served as an Associate Director for the Northeast Region of NFF, Ms. LaBarbera plays an important role in integrating the organization’s national initiatives to those of the California market. Previously, Ms. LaBarbera was a Vice President at Citi Community Capital, a division of Citigroup Global Markets Inc., where she provided structured financing and relationship management to national nonprofit and Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI) clients. Additionally, Ms. LaBarbera has served as a consultant to both municipal government social service agencies and nonprofit advocacy organizations and direct service providers. Ms. LaBarbera holds an MPA in Nonprofit Management from Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs and a BA in Sociology from the University of Virginia.

Justin Chen joined the Financial Services staff as a Senior Associate in 2010. Previously, he was an Investment Analyst for Social Investments at the Annie E. Casey Foundation in Baltimore since 2008. In that capacity, he was responsible for underwriting PRI loans and managing the Foundation's mission-related deposit portfolio. He previously worked as a Community Development Finance Officer at City First Bank of Washington D.C. where he was involved in several New Markets Tax Credit financings, including both debt and equity investments. Mr. Chen received a Master of City Planning from the University of California, Berkeley, and earned a B.A. in Economics and Mathematical Methods in the Social Sciences (MMSS) at Northwestern University. Like others among us, he began his quest on the dark side, as a Credit Analyst at Barclay's Capital in New York.
