Description:

On August 15th, the California Citizens Redistricting Commission released new boundaries for California’s political districts that could redefine the voice of the California voter. The revised state and federal lines are informed by the 2010 Census results, revealing a new story about the demographics of Los Angeles and our state. Beyond the transformation of our political boundaries, the data also provides context for the new cultural and demographic characteristics of our communities.

Healthy City Director John Kim and Professor and Chair of the Department of Geography and Urban Analysis at California State University Los Angeles Ali Modarres will present an analysis of the 2010 Census results and demonstrate ways in which grantmakers and nonprofits can access and incorporate the data into their ongoing work.

Following this presentation, Leslie Rojas Berestein, journalist and curator for the KPCC Multi-American blog, will moderate a panel discussion with leading experts on regional demographic changes. Redistricting Commissioner and Vice President, Civic Engagement at the California Community Foundation María Blanco will be joined by Manuel Pastor, USC professor of Geography and American Studies & Ethnicity and co-director of USC's Center for the Study of Immigrant Integration (CSII) in a conversation about this new landscape.

Learn about the impact of the Census results, new California state and congressional district boundaries and ways these changes can inform foundations’ policy and advocacy efforts. Participants will also gain skills and knowledge about ways to incorporate this new data into philanthropic initiatives and strategies.

This program is presented in partnership with the California Community Foundation and the Southern California Grantmakers.

Location: California Community Foundation - Figueroa Courtyard, 281 S. Figueroa Street, Suite 100 Los Angeles, CA 90012
