Government Grants Overview

Grants are made by all levels of government. The good news: To ensure fairness, the government is required to make grant information available to the public. Most levels of government will probably have this information on the Internet. The bad news: There is no one-stop place where you can get information on all the different levels of government. It will be a time-consuming process to research the different grants offered by all of the different agencies within the government.

Grants are made by all levels of government:

  1. Federal Grants
  2. State Grants
  3. County Grants
  4. City Grants
How to get more information on government grants available in your area?
1. Contact the Elected Officials in your area.
They may offer Grant workshops to help their constituents learn more about local funding opportunities.

To find your Elected Officials, go to:
Project Vote Smart (PVS)
http://www.vote-smart.org
Scroll down on page to "Look up Candidates and Elected Officials"
Enter your 9-digit zip code.

Applying for government grants is a rigorous and competitive process. Your organization may need to hire a consultant to guide you through the first time you apply. Your organization must be prepared for strict application, program evaluation and reporting requirements.

2. Search for Federal, State, County and City grants online.

3. Print Resources are available in our Nonprofit Resource Library
Guide to Federal Funding for Governments & Nonprofits. Washington: Government Information Services. 2003. [Updated quarterly, and includes a listing of grant deadlines.]
